In 2009 , the TV show , Hoarders : Buried Alive was created . It was a turning point in the lives of hoarders , who had hitherto been regarded as a slacker , lazy or careless . Or worse , people thought we were crazy . As we now know and recognize , they are people with disabilities who need to be treated like anyone else with a similar problem.
Hoarders falls short in a major front . The typical program begins with a family in extreme conditions. They are about to lose their house in the county, eldercare intervened , living in a dangerous environment and should be removed and demolished the house . These are certainly extreme cases that go into great television. And that shed light on a long and difficult problem even open a public debate on them.
After describing the problems hoarders bring huge cleaning equipment and various moving vehicles and jumps in the house in question . There is no doubt that , in extreme cases where there is danger to the occupants , emergency measures such as these are necessary . But the average hoarder living with the disease just is not in imminent danger of harming themselves or others , is really the way to go in dealing with them ? Not unambiguous.
I've always wondered what it would be like to see these " hoarders " driven by a year later . Some have argued that what they had done for them , some have fallen , but it is likely that most would be in their way back to where they were when we met.
What is needed and what is appropriate for this population is not in imminent danger focuses on the customer , the customer in the form of work that allows customers to evaluate their approach to business, its relationship with business, to compare and contrast their space and the way most people see their collections. I have worked with clients every week for months and watched resist change in their first thought to make a minimum effort to get rid of things. As our work progresses , they begin to "get it " and start asking questions about her that I ask , but before you can say ! " I really do not need to keep the clothes that do not fit into the more do? I have to get rid of those old clothes ten years and make room in the closet to see what I have . " That, to an organizer is music to our ears . But it is a change that has to evolve slowly over time and , like all self achievement comes when the customer is willing to listen, understand and accept.
No summary of the problems they had years to develop solutions, but they can have an apartment or a house in a square inch at a time.
